Puppy’s First Month of Service Dog Training

Do you have any advice for desensitization if you have sensory issues? For example Could I have my mom help expose the dog to certain louder environments because I’m autistic and can’t handle them myself.

Any tips for when first bringing home your prospect puppy? I want to avoid conditioning any bad habits or not doing the proper things when it comes to conditioning service dog type behavior

This very helpful, because I felt and still feel like alone like I am the only one training my dog at 2 years old and I couldn't when he was a baby at the time was just I wasn't diagnosed yet and nobody knew the real problem/ not going diagnosis a girl also he was a skittish dog at the time. it sucks that people use the stuff from amazon so flippantly. i use a vest that just says in training and have some custom leash wraps to compensate. my sdit is a puppy tho so i didnt want to get a custom vest when he might chew it or just grow out of it in a month. i have a custom one coming now tho thank god

Where did u get that vest? I got a reg service dog one for my dog but i would like one of those,my dog is pretty much train but i want to now train him in public places like u,thank u

so i got my puppy during covid so she did not get any socialization, so now she's scared of other dogs and sometimes people. how to reverse this? ):

my dog just turned 4 we got her at 2 and shes been helping a lot with my anxiety attacks and crohns flares but when i go out to like foodlion or walmart and shes not there i feel trapped and scared ive been training her for at least a year now the only thing is i cant drive so i can only socalize her in public (pet friendly) once in a while were gonna start going to the dog park at least 3 times a week to help her with dogs (shes fine but just bc) im 13 btw and love training her i have way to many harsesses and collars lmao

You shouldn't take a puppy into pa that early of age.

I used to sit outside businesses (away from door to be polite to the business and their customers) because of all the noise, people traffic and cars. I am glad you spoke about allowing strangers to pet. I didn’t do that with my dog at first so I had to unteach then re-do the stranger desensitization to a point for touching and taking food from strangers – in case, I ever have to go to the hospital and someone else looked after my dog.

My new service dog in training is 7 months old and hes super smart and learns soooo quick but he only does what i ask of him when he wants to. It could be because he was too spoiled as a baby or I might be doing something wrong? Any advice?

Umm… I don’t think you can train your own dog and then call in a service dog.. real service dogs come from actual service dog trainer places …

Rather than a stroller or something, could boots work too? Since they're not touching the ground/floor?

Do you have any advice on owner-training? I’ve talked to most of my family about getting a service dog, but I found it way cheaper to get a puppy and owner-train it.

what was storm taught before she was taken into public? is there anything that she needed to be able to do skill wise before you brought her out for socializing and desensitizing?
