Facing unremitting overcrowding, Oakland Animal Services is providing free adoptions and prolonged hours this week.
This canine adopt-a-thon is being held in response to an unprecedented inflow of dogs over 25 lbs. With a restricted variety of kennels and the continued arrival of latest dogs, Oakland Animal Services is pulling out all of the stops to avoid wasting these bigger dogs’ lives.
“So far, we have largely been able to avoid euthanasia,” says Oakland Animal Services Director Ann Dunn, “through heroic efforts from our foster and adoption teams, the tireless work of incredible volunteers, and because this community has stepped up to adopt following urgent calls for help. As our intake continues to increase, it is getting harder and harder to move dogs through the shelter quickly enough to avoid euthanizing for space. As the challenge for saving our dogs continues to grow, our resolve grows with it. We are absolutely determined to help as many dogs as we possibly can and need your help.”
