Manolo gave birth to her puppies on Christmas, just a few days after she was rescued from the freezing weather in Virginia. The Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) seized the soon-to-be mother pup from a residence just a few days before Christmas. Manolo was stuck outside in a wet, wooden dog house without access to safe temperatures, according to WRIC.

In Virginia, it is illegal to keep a pet dog outdoors without proper shelter in temperatures 85 degrees F or higher or 32 degrees F or lower or during a severe weather warning issued for the area by the National Weather Service.

After seizing the dog, the RACC took her to one of their shelters before transferring her to the Virginia Veterinary Centers (VVC) for overnight monitoring of her pregnancy and approaching birth. Nine Christmas miracles were born, and there were reportedly seven girls and two boys.

“We are grateful to our Officers for saving Manolo from the freezing temps and that these pups arrived in a warm and safe environment with our skilled team at VVC,” RACC said on Facebook.

The RACC said that they plan to put Mama Manolo and her puppies up for adoption in about eight weeks when the baby dogs are more independent and no longer nursing.

We are so glad that Manolo was rescued and brought inside to safe temperatures.

While we cannot change the horrific treatment that many animals have already endured in the past, we can give animals a voice and hold perpetrators accountable for crimes in the present and the future. Many animal abusers are not held accountable by the law, which feeds into this horrific cycle of abuse. You can sign this petition to demand all states make all animal abuse a felony.
