DPH’s Office of Animal Welfare Announces 2 Arrests in Connection with Lewes Dog Cruelty Case; 14 More Dogs Rescued

DPH’s Office of Animal Welfare Announces 2 Arrests in Connection with Lewes Dog Cruelty Case; 14 More Dogs Rescued  – State of Delaware News

Delaware Animal Services (DAS), the enforcement unit throughout the Office of Animal Welfare, proclaims the arrest of a person and a woman concerned in an animal cruelty case. 

On Aug. 25, 2023, Delaware State Police (DSP) Troop 7 acquired a tip from a involved citizen that Dillon Hensey, age 32, and his spouse, Chelsie Puckett, age 33, have been seen within the parking zone of 19791 Coastal Hwy Rehoboth Beach, Del. DSP responded to the realm and positioned Hensey and Puckett parked of their SUV. Delaware Animal Services responded to help with the arrest. Upon arrival, animal welfare officers discovered 14 extra dogs residing within the couple’s SUV. The car was stuffed with trash, feces and particles. The 14 dogs have been seized by animal welfare officers and transported to Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) for care. 

Hensey was taken into custody for the excellent animal cruelty costs, whereas Puckett was taken into custody on unrelated costs. Both have been arraigned at Troop 7 on August 25. The couple is prohibited from proudly owning or possessing animals pending end result of the case. 

  • Hensey has been charged with 29 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and was launched on $14,500 unsecured bond. 

  • Puckett was charged with 14 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and was launched on $7,000 unsecured bond.   

Hensey was needed for abandoning 34 small breed dogs in deplorable situations in a Lewes home in early August. He failed to show himself in to DAS enforcement officers on a number of events.  

The 34 dogs that have been seized on Aug. 7 have been turned over to BVSPCA’s care. Thirty of the 34 dogs have been adopted and are actually in loving properties, and 4 are in foster care. BVSPCA hopes to make a few of the 14 dogs seized final week out there for adoption as quickly as Wednesday. 

The Office of Animal Welfare thanks the general public for his or her suggestions in addition to Delaware State Police for his or her cooperation with finding the suspects on this case.
