The intelligence-led operation had the help of detector canine Toby and members of An Garda Síochána from the Dundalk Detective Unit, the Roads Policing Unit, and the Armed Support Unit.
The cigarettes, which have been branded ‘Platinum Seven’, have an estimated worth of over €8.2m, a Revenue spokesperson mentioned.
This represented a possible loss to the Exchequer of roughly €6.4m.
A person in his 60s has been questioned and “investigations are ongoing”, the spokesperson added.
“This seizure is a part of Revenue’s ongoing operations concentrating on the shadow economic system and the availability of unlawful tobacco merchandise.”
“If businesses, or members of the general public, have any info concerning smuggling, they’ll contact Revenue in confidence on 1800-295295,” the spokesperson mentioned.
