Abilene aiming to transfer dog park

The city of Abilene is aiming to transfer Camp Barkeley, the dog park situated at Grover Nelson Park.

The Parks and Recreation board fulfilled on Tuesday night do go over possible places to move the park to. Five alternatives were talked about, consisting of Scarborough Park, Kirby Park and Oscar Rose Park. During the conference, they limited 2 alternatives to do additional research study on. One of those is land in between Cal Young Park and MLK Park. The other is an open field behind what utilized to be Fannin Elementary.

Both places would need a fair bit of facilities to be included: water sources, electrical energy, a parking area and toilets.

The existing dog park is divided into a location for little dogs and a location for big dogs that amounts to 2.8 acres. The Cal Young Park location has 5 acres available while the Fannin location has 2.8.

However, some individuals aren’t happy with the concept of the dog park moving at all. The city wishes to turn the existing space at Nelson Park into more parking for the Zoo and Festival Gardens.

“We go here 3 times a week, in some cases a bit more,” said Mark Harmon, a dog park visitor. “It would be an embarassment if we do not have this. I actually hope they do something right with this, trigger we have a great deal of dogs in Abilene, and a great deal of owners.”

“It’s type of sad, due to the fact that I’ve had good friends and animals and we have actually simply shown up here for so long,” said Rachel Chris, another visitor. “We’ve got little fur children, so we’re type of upset about it. I hope they alter their mind.”
