tory burch faucets humberto leon for LA pop-up store
Tory Burch has teamed up with American designer and artistic director Humberto Leon to create The Laboratory, a brand new idea retailer in Los Angeles on Melrose Avenue. The façade and inside of the pop-up store are coated with the work of German photographer Walter Schels, depicting black-and-white portraits of cats mid-meow.
‘I have long admired Humberto’s creativity,’ says Tory Burch. ‘I was interested to see his take on our brand.’

walter schels brings cat-and-mouse playfulness to tory burch retailer
Inside the brand new Los Angeles retailer, a playful recreation of cat and mouse unfolds. A big-scale picture of a mouse is repeated on the surface of the building, whereas cat portraits fills the inside partitions of the area. Tory Burch (discover extra here) was instantly drawn to the work of Walter Schels (discover extra here). The ready-to-wear assortment of the style model options Schels’ cat and a bunny pictures printed on tops and skirts. ‘There’s a human component to Walter’s pictures, in the way in which he seems on the animals and so they in flip look again,’ Burch shares.
‘The pictures are so arresting. It stops you in your tracks, and you question it. I know Tory is a lover of the arts, so I wanted to incorporate that,’ provides Humberto Leon (discover extra here). ‘I wanted it to feel like walking into an exhibition. There are few elements, but they are all strong.’ Humberto Leon additionally commissioned artist Aranza Garcia of Chuch Estudio in Merida, Mexico, to create a sequence of pink ceramic seats, which he positioned all through the area in clusters of 9. A shag carpet, paying homage to a cat tower, covers the ground and shows.
