The charity is highlighting the growing issue of canine obesity around Ireland.

As our dogs arrive at our dinner tables, desperate for a taste of what we’re eating, it can be difficult to turn them down.

Now, charity Dogs Trust is urging people to watch the diets of our canine friends.

A new study found that 40% of people struggle not to share human food with dogs, but more worryingly, just 35% can feel their dogs ribs.

1 in 3 owners guesstimate the weight of their dogs food and Niamh Curran Kelly from Dogs Trust is urging people to do their research.

“Obesity increases your dog’s risk of arthritis, diabetes and heart disease.

“We always advise owners to weigh their dogs’ food as measuring cups can be inaccurate and a few extra pieces of kibble a day adds up to a lot of extra calories for a dog over time.

“Always give treats in moderation and reduce their usual food portions if needed. Generally, no more than 10 per cent of your dog’s diet should be made up of treats.”
