COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – The native humane society is at present making ready for kitten season.
11 News spoke with the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region about their Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, which helps humanely lower cat overpopulation in Colorado Springs and Pueblo.
“Our TNR program is doing great this year so far. We are on track to spay or neuter maybe double the cats that we did spay and neuter last year so hopefully it’s going to be a successful year getting more unwanted, or keeping more unwanted kittens from being born,” stated Public Relations Manager of HSPPR Cody Costra.
Springtime marks the beginning of kitten season, the place shelters all throughout the nation can get overwhelmed by the quantity of cats being born. HSPPR’s TNR program in a two-month span just lately carried out 168 spays/neuters in southern Colorado.
“We get a lot of kittens into our care, so we have all hands on deck getting ready and making sure that all of our kitten spaces are open and clean, and ready for any mamas that do come in that are pregnant or if anybody brings in a bunch of kittens,” stated Costra.
HSPPR is reminding Coloradans to not “kitnap.” If you discover a litter of kittens, HSPPR says human intervention is often not required, because the mom could also be elsewhere briefly. If the kittens seem like they’re doing okay, together with if they’re quiet, dry, clear with no obvious accidents, HSPPR says to simply depart them be. But, if the kittens are sick, moist, soiled or noisy, name HSPPR. You may also volunteer to be a colony supervisor.
“We really do preach that spaying and neutering your pets is part of responsible pet ownership because spaying and neutering your pets does lead to healthier, happier and a more consistent pet population that is happier in the long run.” stated Costra. “If it’s the right time to adopt a pet, you can come in and see our cats that are currently available for adoption. That way when you do adopt, you’re not just taking that cat into your loving home, you’re also opening up that kennel space for the cats coming up that will need that space.”
