The Calgary Humane Society is using a discount rate on some felines that are typically neglected.
The organization says it has 54 cats presently in its shelter, with more getting here every day.
However, 28 of the cats are black – something authorities state makes it challenging for them to be embraced.
“The cats are getting embraced; we’re seeing about 6 or 7 a day however, regrettably, black cats are normally the last to get selected at the shelter,” said Anna-Lee Fitzsimmons, the Calgary Humane Society’s associate director of neighborhood engagement.
In order to help move them into brand-new houses, the shelter is using a 15 percent discount rate for the whole month of April on adoption costs for all of their adult black cats.
There’s no clear reason they’re being neglected, however Fitzsimmons says the brighter-coloured cats in the shelter are picked a lot more typically.
“Some individuals think it’s due to the fact that of that superstitious notion that black cats are bad luck or something like that,” she said. “I believe in more modern-day popular culture, it’s truthfully due to the fact that they’re a bit harder to photo and they are continuously taking on cats that are brighter in colour or have longer hair or a range of colours.”
She says when the shelter has an abundance of black cats, it impacts the adoption procedure when all the cats look comparable to one another. However, Fitzsimmons says when individuals engage with the cats, they’ll understand immediately that every one has their own special character.
“The colour of a cat makes no distinction in their character,” she said. “Every cat has something a bit various to provide.”
Anyone aiming to adopt a permanently feline friend does have their option of older cats or kittens – offered they aren’t particular about colour.
“We have about 6 black kittens which would imply we have upwards of 18 to 20 grownup cats,” Fitzsimmons said.
“We’re simply attempting to get the word out there that black cats make simply as fantastic buddy animals as every other coloured cat.”
The Calgary Humane Society is open 7 days a week for members of the general public to drop in and see the animals. All adoption visits can be booked online, however staff are in some cases available to help walk-ins with the procedure.
