Only sure animals have developed the flexibility to fly.

University of Arizona researchers say hyperactivity within the cerebellum of the mind seems to be what makes birds a member of such an unique membership.

Humans have a cerebellum, too. It helps us walk, run and coordinate interplay with the atmosphere.

“But birds have taken that basic organization and they’ve really cranked up the volume on how much they use it,” mentioned Paul Gignac, UA evolutionary biologist and analysis coauthor.

Fossil data counsel that as dinosaurs advanced into birds capable of fly, their cerebellum grew in dimension.

“The factor that was most stunning was that we discovered a rise within the a part of the mind that’s used for smelling. We didn’t anticipate that to occur,” Gignac mentioned.

Gignac mentioned future work will examine how hen brains work as they navigate extra sophisticated flight paths than a perch-to-perch line used within the latest analysis.
