UNSURE FUTURE: Matthew Lynn, Harry Richards, Charlie Coulls and Sam Knight are amongst the only staff and volunteers enabled onto the Wetheriggs Animal Rescue Centre website after a break out of bird influenza

Unpredictability surrounds the future of the dale’s last staying animal sanctuary after it was required to close due to a break out of bird influenza.
More than 400 birds were damaged after the illness was determined at Wetheriggs Rescue and Preservation Centre, near Greta Bridge, on Monday, November 21.
The centre stays closed regardless of the cull and might remain shut for approximately a year.
Owner Terry Bowes stated the future for the staying 400 animals doubts till details is gotten from Defra officers.
Up until then the sanctuary has no other way of producing money to keep going, nor is it enabled to take in animals for rescue.
He stated: “The way things are at the moment they are talking about it being a year.
“We’ve asked the question what would happen if we relocated because we haven’t got any birds now. They are now giving a risk assessment on every animal that we have got here to see what we would have to do if we were to move somewhere else.”
The centre created money through public contributions throughout gos to, taking animals for instructional sees to schools and other locations, and through unique open days when the unique animals barn was open to the general public.
Mr Bowes stated there had actually been incredible assistance given that the required closure.
He included: “People have been great – we have this fighting fund and that has kept us going to the end of the year. But we can’t go on. I am loathe to give up because it is not just the animals of concern, it’s the volunteers.
“We have special needs volunteers who rely on Wetheriggs. There is so much at stake – it’s not just animals it’s people as well. It is just horrible – one of our special needs volunteers said to me, ‘Is it me, have I done something wrong’?.”
Mr Bowes thanked Barnard Castle mayor Cllr Rima Chatterjee who arranged for the group to hold a charity stall at the weekly Wednesday market in the town, along with at The Bowes Museum’s Christmas Market, and organisers of the town’s joyful lights switch-on.
Numerous groups have actually likewise made contributions, such as Colburn’s Kings Church, Glaxo Retirement Club, and even parish publication The Leaflet.
Mr Bowes stated: “Thankfully, our main feed suppliers are really, good. They have said to me not to worry about the money, pay when you can.
“We will get some compensation – we don’t know how much. It will not be anywhere near what the birds were worth. It is taking a long time because there are so many cases.”
New streams of profits consist of a creative volunteer who is taking commissions to paint pictures of individuals’s family pets and there are strategies to produce a book about the centre’s history. Mr Bowes is hoping individuals will use recommendations on how to get it released and any other concepts they have about how to raise funds.
The closure likewise indicates the centre can not perform its core function– providing sanctuary to hurt and homeless animals. Mr Bowes stated: “We can’t take anything in.
“We had a major problem of cattle that were found on the A1 that we were asked by highways would we take them until they find out who they belong to – we couldn’t take them.
“This time of year, the weather being like it is, some of the hedgehogs are waking up because they are hungry and there is no way we can take them.”
In 2015 the centre took in a record variety of hedgehogs, however luckily they were all went back to the wild in October ahead of their hibernation season.
Mr Bowes concluded: “Obviously we are going to be running into the spring soon when we get loads of calls from people about baby animals that they have found. The knock on is going to be catastrophic – there aren’t any other rescue centres in the area.”
