Buying the perfect present is a notion that takes over our entire consciousness throughout December – but is that what the Season of Good Will is all about? Nope.

The real joy (other than hot wine and lots of Baileys) comes from the simple act of giving and helping others, and it doesn’t need to be something expensive or elaborate to make a huge impact to people in need.

With the cost of living crisis affecting millions of Brits, charities and non-profit organisations have never been more needed – or as stretched for resources. Charities across the board are struggling with a drop in donations, with many smaller groups fearing they may have to close their doors for good.

So there’s never been a better time to opt for a charity gift rather than something physical for a loved one. You can be sure it’ll be genuinely appreciated, and put to use!

Need some inspo? Make a charity donation in lieu of Christmas cards; buy something from a charity’s Amazon wish list; changing your Amazon Wish settings to make passive donations to a good cause for the next year; picking up some extra non-perishables during your next food shop to pass on to your local food bank or shelter; sponsor a child, dog or sanctuary animal; or simply have a big clear out and take it all the the charity shop.

If you can’t stretch to a financial donation right now, that’s OK. The most valuable thing you have to share is your time, so why not suggest ditching the gifts altogether and signing up for some volunteering in the New Year; or help spread the word of causes that you believe in with your networks.

The Women’s Health team have rounded up a few of the good causes that are close to our hearts and who are in need of donations and support right now.

Remember, as Charles Dickens once wrote, “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another.”

Camels are more synonymous with Egypt than horses and donkeys, but there are thousands of working equines in the Pyramids. Like many Middle Eastern countries, there’s few animal welfare laws to protect them, resulting in a lot of heartbreaking situations that could be avoided with education and support – and that’s where Prince Fluffy Kareem comes in.

Set up by a Brit, PFK’s desert oasis sanctuary and horse hospital is now home to hundreds of the gentle beasts of burden, some permanently.

To make positive, lasting change, the animals’ owners – who rely on them for income – are welcomed and educated by PFK’s team of vets, farriers and full-time animal care assistants, so that their precious animals can return home healthier and happier than when they arrived.

Follow them on Facebook to see some of the fantastic work they do.

No one should have to sleep in the cold this winter, and donating to crisis will help provide warm shelters for those who need it over the festive period.

For £29.07 you can buy a Christmas dinner for someone in need.

The holidays can be difficult if you feel unsupported by your family, especially for young people who are at home with family that doesn’t understand them.

Unicef Keep Fit Box

Four Paws lead some incredible missions to rescue animals from extreme cruelty, and lobby for permanent change in countries where abuse is rampant (and legal).

They recently rescued a bear who had been living alone in a small cage welded to the side of an Albanian restaurant.

Previously they have saved orangutans in Borneo; and rescued smuggled lion and tiger cubs from the murky big cat trade.

A trip to the cinema is a regular treat, but for people in hospital with a terminal illness, or families whose child has never been well enough to go home, it’s an impossible dream.

That’s why MediCinema is such a brilliant charity. They build screening rooms at hospitals that are big enough to fit beds, monitors, and other important bits of medical kit so patients and their loved ones can watch a new release.

It allows a small window of normality and escapism in an otherwise scary (and often boring) place.

Girl’s sanitary kit

Gentle sun and moon bears are kidnapped from the wild – or stolen from their mums – and locked in cages and farmed for their bile, which is an ingredient sought after for use in ‘Traditional Chinese Medicine’.

They spend their lives locked in barren cages with a rusty metal tube stuck directly in to their gall bladder, which is ‘milked’ every day. It’s excruciating and the bears often inflict injuries upon themselves as they try to escape their cells, or slowly lose their mind through boredom.

Animals Asia has set up sanctuaries for bears saved from bile farms, and lobby governments to ban bile farms.
