An appeal has been launched to find the owner of a dog that was rescued after it fell down a well.

Cleveland Fire Brigade said the Caucasian Shepherd had “accidentally tumbled” 13ft (4m) at Phoenix Sidings, Newtown, near Stockton, becoming trapped in the water.

Two lengths of fire hose were used during the rescue on Friday, and a specialist firefighter “bravely” lowered himself down to bring the dog to safety.

The dog was “happy and apparently uninjured”, the service said, and is being looked after by the RSPCA.

A crew from Thornaby was called to the scene just before 20:00 BST, after the alarm was raised by RSPCA inspectors.

A fire service spokesperson appealed for the owner to make contact with the charity.

“Let’s try and get this furry friend back home,” they added.
