Off leash recall is something most dog owners wish to achieve, getting your dog to come back when called dependably is a difficult job. In my viewpoint, it’s an advantage and it can be extremely hazardous if your dog does not listen to you off-leash. Modern remote collar training is taking the dog training market by storm! Tom Davis discusses each action of the method to present the remote collar to your dog with self-confidence! It would mean the world to me if you leave a like 👍🏻 and drop a comment to support the channel. Also here is the e collar I was using guys https://www.dogtra.com/products/e-collars/280c
Are you using the vibration or shock ?
What lvl do you start on….is't that important info???
Nice info about how to use ecollar correctly.
I'm having an issue . I have an e collar on my 8 month old pup, my older dog isn't wearing one. But if I beep or vibrate the puppy, my older dog not wearing one is responding. She runs and cowers ( she's sleeping, I repremand him, she reacts. ) Is there like an ultrasound that she hears ? It's a patpet 350. It seems like the shock isn't working all the time. ( When in holding it against my wrist firmly.) The reason I want to shock my pup, is he " counter and surface surfs if he realizes I can't repremand him because I'm too far away. He almost got a hot pot of spaghetti off the stove, he chewed up my tv remote, candle, all on a HIGH shelf. Had to stand on his hinds to get it. I was on a conference call , and I couldn't get over the dog gate quick enough and he's quick. ( He's mal/ GS/ lab. It's almost like he plans what he's going to grab, and waits. Lol. No doesn't work , he is obedience trained. But he's figured it out, hop the gate, . ( My house is too small for a crate. .I honestly think if I can give a " no " leave it" " come here" command..and he is ignoring me , a zap or two to back up the command from a distance, I think he would take me seriously, and recall, and I can reinforce it with a high value treat and praise, play tug, and he will figure it out..a shock, or treat. Then, when he's being bad, I can interrupt him , and recall him without zapping him. ( I don't want to punish him.its not a fix all. I'd rather have him be rewarded .I want it as a last resort enforcement to back up a voice command.the reason why is I can put things out of reach, like 4 ft. If it's left lower it's my fault for not putting it up out of reach. I'm afraid one of these days, I put something out of reach, and he could be hurt.
My dog is a little over one he goes into neighbors yards when he gets away from me. And he shows aggression when we thy to force him back home. Any advice would help! 😊😢
I have an eight month old woodle , he was very compliant until a few weeks ago. He has bolted several times now. Run across busy streets and we are lucky he didn’t get hurt. I am hoping to try the collar out today. Thank you for your informative videos.
The fact it has taken me nearly 2 years to understand this method of training is terrible. I’ve seen the lack of communication and bond between myself and my dog with the “purely positive” methods I’ve been using since my pup was 7 weeks old. Food is higher value than me. If I don’t have food I’m not worth listening to. No more! I want a relationship with my dog, not to be a food dispenser.
What prongs are you using with this guy?
I got a Dogtra 1900S handsfree with the Titanium Enhanced Contacts. Neither the stock 5/8" nor the Titanium Enhanced Contacts seem to be making contact. I put it on my neck up to a level 15, but haven't gone past with my boy who is a 15 month golden at level 12. No matter a nick or constant, doesn't register a thing. So, no point to crank it up more when I see you constantly working with much lower levels & him not registering a thing.
I have a new puppy, mixed lab and border collie. At what age can you start e collar training? Is it just for off leash training, or can it be used for all training? I also have a 1 year old German shepard I am trying to stop her from jumping up on people (she is happy to see them), can the ecollar help train her to the word off? Puppy is about 12 weeks old. Love your show! Very informative. I am located in oregon about 12 miles from the Cedar Creek Fire. So due to the smoke, outside training is limited at this time. I wear oxygen due to copd caused by covid 2 years ago. But I do got out with mask and oxygen about an hour if the air quality is moderate. Right now it is at hazardous quality. So I have to really limit my time outside. I would appreciate your opinion about the questions I asked. I can train and have trained dogs before, my 4 little ankle biters, chihuahuas, currently in my home. Also in my past I had lab dobi mix, labs and a rotti. All well behaved. But they have since traveled the rainbow bridge. My age is 62.
Oh this is so helpful!! Thank you so much. I was anxious to use the collar. Now I get it.
how do you know what level of simulation to use, I. E. how you know the dog is feeling, and reacting to the simulation? Benny wasn't even moving his head or anything.
Can we teach retriving by this method
Thank you. You really helped us see how we could use an e collar with our beagle puppy without it being a punishment type of thing. We just want her to come when we’re at the dog park😊
making this training a positive experience. thank you.
Unclear as to which button is used and for what period of time. Do you use the continuous button when you call the dog and keep it pressed until the dog returns to you?
My question is: Should I continiously use the e-collar even after it perfectly learn the recall? It would be awkward walking with my dog with a thing in my hand
your maybe wrong about the continous. Both the dfferent brands of Ecollars I have used the continious only last 10sec. both are major brands for hunting dogs.
What age can you start doing this with your dog? Also, what age can you start with a prong collar?
Hey! Do you have any vids on how effective Ecollar recall training is when there’s other on and off lead dogs around? My one year old lab is doing brilliantly in so many areas, even walks off lead calmly past joggers, bikes, busy rises, you make it, BUT more than not when dogs are about he doesn’t overly listen and I’m so bloody tired of it now. I have been cautious of ecollars, due to all the negative reactions they get, I’ve definitely been one of those people who doesn’t really understand it, but I want to! I’m feeling more and more drawn to using one when we are out and dogs are around. I WANT to fully enjoy my dog off lead and give him the freedom he deserves and know that he won’t go charging up to dogs all the time. Mainly for his safety. Anyway, if you have vids that show this it would be great, or any tips on the BEST waterproof easiest collar would be much appreciated. Thanks
I have a 5 month old Doberman who is just now learning how to recall using the Ecollar (The Boss/1mile). I was a little apprehensive at first therefore was at a point of finding a private off leash trainer until I found your videos! You have helped me and Tessa so much and we thank you! 😊 Much love from Knoxville TN!
Does this method also work with dogs that are very independent?(Shiba Inu or Husky)
Great video. How might one become a dog trainer, like you?
I love that you love the dogs !
Great video! I am learning so much from you. I know you use the Dogtra E-collar, but what do you think about the ET-300? I was given this E-collar from the BnT I sent my dog to and my dog came back to me learning just about nothing. It's terrible paying $2500 to get your dog trained and not getting him trained. I have been getting him trained from you and I appreciate you. Keep the videos coming please!!!
So you aren’t very specific. Are you using a shock, vibration, or sound? Less quick lingo would be nice, more explanation
This is great! We'll work on this!
If I go walking outside with treats, my dog will never leave. He’s a border collie but doesn’t get distracted very easily.
Your off leash dog philosophy and training is exactly what I've been looking for! My Sadie is pretty well trained, with a pretty good recall, but her prey drive is strong, so I bought an e-collar to protect her from wildlife. Your training is practical and makes sense for us. Well done and thank you!! Now I'm less afraid to get going with the e-collar to protect her while she lives her best doggy life!
I've been using Dogtra collars with working dogs for about 15 years – love that brand (tried others and didn't care for them). I realize that people use e-collars (and train in general) in different ways, but in my case I prefer to use the buzzer (vibrate) feature for recall training and reserve the "nick" and the "bite" for corrections. The buzz is great for recall situations where you may not want to shout, or your dog may not be able to hear you (in the water, loud environment, etc). With the buzzer reserved for recall, I can save the "nick" for situations where I need to break the dog's fixation or correct minor behavior glitches.
Also, as I think you mentioned, make sure that you use the collar for FUN things – walks, training, playing, hiking, etc – and not for punishment. My current dog LOVES the e-collar – he gets very excited when I pick it up. My last dog, however, would give me serious stink-eye when I put it on him (he was a rescue that had apparently been punished with the e-collar).
I wish I had found trainers like you when I started training with the e-collar! I keep beating myself up about it but my trainer at the time used it as punishment and when I saw him shocking the crap out of reactive dog I dropped him and started scouring the internet for more humane trainers. You and them have saved me from making things worse. I’m working on getting a dogtra collar because my current sport dog does’t have the diverse levels of stimulation. Keep spreading your knowledge!
Would I use the same technique to correct my dog, let’s say my dog is trying to eat my other dogs food and he chooses not to listen, would I shock him the moment I say my command to leave it?
I just paid $80 for an online video on this exact lesson subscribed and hope to learn more from you! Amazing content wishing you all the best from Southern California! Thanks again!
How would you apply this with a deaf dog??? thx for all your help and great videos I am buying the dogtra Tom Davis 280c but I am a bit unsure if its a good idea since my pooch is totally deaf.
How do I find the threshold stimulation level ? If the dog is so much more sensitive to the stimulation than I am , I don’t want to use me as the standard ………… ?..
I’d like to see a demonstration, once he’s trained, in a real world setting like at the park with other dogs, squirrels and people around.
Nice video
what level should one use on the ecollar?
Hi. Why do you place the receiver on the side of neck when producer sugest to place it under the chin?
Thank you for making this video 👍
When do you start to phase out the e-collar?
Once your dog has established reliable recall, is it still a good idea to occasionally use the e-collar?
Our German Shepherd is trained on an ecollar, and basically responds well in general to my commands, but nothng seems to work when it comes to dogs walking by the yard. She gets amped up in 0-60 and ignores me and the collar. (she is pretty reactive in an excited way with othe dogs). On leash I can control it pretty well, but the yard is an issue. BTW, we are in the upstate area as well.
If your dog is far away (150 yards or so), do you hold down the vibrate button the whole time until they return?
thought my dog had a decent recall until he wouldn’t recall after seeing a horse for the first time. Nothing happened thanks to the well trained horse and my dog just wanted to play but that could have gone really bad so now i’m here trying to learn how to be a better owner for my pup. thank you for sharing this
Thank you Tom
I really want to research using this with my dog as he knows what I mean by "come" but chooses to ignore when outdoors. Im not too knowledgeable on e collars and I may have missed this in the video but is it an electric shock or just a vibration? What settings do you have it on?
Awesome video! Thank you for sharing! I use a shock collar without the shock prongs attached. There is a beep and vibrate function. Am I safe to assume this works the same as your suggested collar as far as technique?
I love your attitude with training dogs!
Hello ! My Doberman has no idea what a recall is , would this be an issue to begin a recall with the e collar ? or does he have to have some sort of re call already ?
love the use of the soundbox! Super helpful!! And, great video. Your videos have truly changed the relationship with my dog!!
When you trigger the collar is it delivering stimulation, vibration or sound?
