This is a short-lived foster wolfdog I am presently dealing with. No, he has actually not been abused. This is typical and its one factor most dog fitness instructors and shelters do not understand what to do with one. Wolfdogs are cool however there is a lot to be gotten ready for prior to you get one.

  1. I’ve had 3 including 1 currently, each totally different in temperament & attitude. My first, a low content female Belgium Shepherd mix pretty much trained herself. The second I rescued, a rotti lab mix wolf female just hated men from her 1st owners abuse, a real handful until about 6yo. I can’t stress enough how they are complex intelligent individuals with too many possible factors in their breeding & life(F generation, % of mix, type of dog, early life experience) that negate ones ability to define their characteristics overall. In general though, the more wolf DNA the less likely it will trust people including owner. Lastly even thou I live in a city, I wouldn’t recommend it at least with my latest wolfdog Aayin – mid content malamute unfixed male. He has had trouble with off leash dogs repeatably, first time he was just 6 months old by a pitbull cross that jumped out of a car window & across a road to attack him. Again @ 12 months by 2 pitbulls actually promoted by their owners. After 7 years golden labs, german shepherds, once another wolfdog & toy dogs of all sizes take issue. In every case the other dogs were male, never counted on me defending my dog & either backed down or cooperated after I engaged; lucky me. Other dogs are a constant worry for me, 1 on 1 Aayin would almost certainly kill a dog in short order but I’d never want that. Moreover the law in Vancouver & the rest of BC ATM states: any dog suspected of being a wolf cross is considered a feral animal and if involved in an altercation is automatically at fault regardless of circumstance. In short, these are not the right dogs for everyone & there is much to consider before ever attempting to own one.
Just my 2cents, sry for the rant.

  2. To us natives here where I live we know wolves and dogs are not alike. Wolf dogs and dogs are still not alike when there is more wolf than dog in the critter. Trust and bonding depends critically on the person. If the person is a wolf person then the wolf will bond with you. If the person isn't then it's practically never going to happen. I've had the privilege of raising a few, gifting a few to other natives that are wolf people, freeing some back to the national park that we chose not to bond with because of the purpose of giving them back to the wild to balance our environment here in our mountains.
