The L.A. Zoo is home to 2 jaguars— one feminine named Johar, and one male named Kaloa. At 22 years old, Kaloa is among the oldest jaguars in North America! His age and well being are a testomony to the superb care he receives on the Zoo. Wild jaguar populations are declining resulting from deforestation, cattle ranching, and poaching. Financial assist from the Zoo has enabled conservation organization Paso Pacifico to protect habitats, buy digicam traps, cut back jaguar predation on livestock, implement a jaguar curriculum to be taught to rural schoolchildren, and begin a carnivore monitoring venture in El Salvador.
