When you tilt the litter and you see the clumps appear, scoop out just the clumps. Then tilt the other way and scoop just the clumps again. Then tilt one more time to even it all out and you are done.

I do this with the wood pellet litter. It sifts out the dust so unused pellets aren’t wasted.

Too bad most clumping litter no longer clumps as well as this. Scoopaway must have changed its formula because urine no longer clumps but falls apart stinking up the rest of the litter. I am looking for a new litter.

Oh dear u stress me out for the absence of common sense in transferring the sand to the basin and lifting 2 basins when u only need the drainer bowl to the big basin. And why drain when u can just scoop 2 pcs of solid pee sand?🙄

I do this too. Too many product in the market either they are costly or we'll have to still play the treasure hunt game with the scoop. What the hack. Just add few extra basins instead of the metal basin so you can wash the used one when necessary. Actually this method don't consume much of your time. Minus the metal basin though.
House Cats I love this idea using a third bin as someone suggested. I am going to be getting wood pellets to use for litter & will need to sift it as the liquid dissolves the pellets in to saw dust. Scoop solids daily, stir up pellets & saw dust to absorb liquid & smell, sift weekly. Apparently pellets are far cheaper, better for the cat's lungs & ours as well as being more environmentally friendly. I love the bins you chose! Did you buy the strainer basket like that or drill holes in it?
