The European Solar Orbiter spacecraft saw an odd snake-like filament crawl throughout the sun’s surface area prior to an enormous plasma eruption.
The filament come from a sunspot, a cooler area on the sun‘s surface area where the star’s electromagnetic field is twisted. The “snake” took 3 hours to crawl throughout the sun’s disk at a speed of 105 miles (170 kilometers) per second, or 378,000 miles per hour (608,000 km/h) according to a declaration (opens in brand-new tab) from the European Area Company (ESA), which runs the spacecraft. In the time-lapse series built from images caught by Solar Orbiter‘s Extreme Ultraviolet Imager, the “snake” slides throughout the disk within a 2nd.
