The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport is not going to restore or exchange the site visitors lights alongside Snake Road.

According to an announcement launched on behalf of the MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale Tlabela, obtained a month after Benoni City Times’ preliminary enquiry, they inspected the street.

“It was notable that almost all of the signalised intersections had been vandalised.

“Because of its remoteness and constant vandalism, these intersections might require the department to temporarily decommission the current traffic control measures and opt for stop junctions,” learn the assertion.

The Benoni City Times on October 20 reported that robots at seven intersections alongside the 4km stretch of street had been vandalised between March and April, inflicting prolonged delays throughout peak-hour site visitors.

Trenches resulting in the site visitors gentle on the nook of Main Reef and Snake roads are a sign of cable theft.

The affected intersections included Heron and Tom Jones streets, Dewald Hattingh, Main Reef and New Modder roads, in addition to Pioneer and Golden drives.

The vandals eliminated the cables of the automated alerts or minimize all the masts on the base and eliminated them.

At the time Mackenzie Park resident, Melanie Kruger acknowledged though navigating the extreme site visitors congestion is irritating for motorists and residents, safety threats equivalent to a better incidence of smash-and-grabs are of grave concern.

Upon listening to the robots shall be changed with cease indicators, Kruger acknowledged that the ‘solution’ is laughable.

Masts of a number of the site visitors lights have been minimize down and stolen.

“They have stationed EMPD officers at the major intersections during peak times which somewhat created a steady flow,” she mentioned.

“Once the cease indicators have been put in, their providers will not be obligatory and they’re going to redeploy them.

“Motorists do not heed stop signs at the best of times. Pair that with gridlock traffic and we are going to see a lot more reckless driving, resulting in accidents. This is not a solution. It is a death trap,” Kruger acknowledged.

At the time of publication, the MEC’s workplace couldn’t affirm when cease indicators can be put in.
