Over the next couple of weeks Tortoise will be taking things even slower than usual. It’s not quite a complete standstill, but there won’t be any Sensemaker newsletters, or new episodes of the Slow Newscast or the News Meeting. But the Tortoise newsroom won’t be going totally silent over Christmas. We’ll be publishing special episodes of the Sensemaker podcast each weekday, each one trying to understand someone who has driven the news in 2022. We start today with Mick Lynch.
Looking further ahead, we’ve got a slate of live events lined up for the new year. Here’s a taster:
- We’ve got a ThinkIn following Polly Curtis’s six-part series – The Tavistock: Inside the gender clinic – we’re asking what next for the treatment of children (Tuesday 31 January) with gender dysphoria once the NHS Gender Identity Development Service closes.
- And on the back of Tortoise Lates (and the accompanying bar) this autumn, we’ve got three more on Masculinity (Thursday 26 January), Words (Thursday 23 February) and Modern Love (Thursday 30 March).
The tenth edition of the Tortoise Quarterly, our short book of long stories, is out now. It explores the world of comics – of both sorts: we’ve got our very own Matthew d’Ancona on the comedic brilliance of Dave Chappelle as well as David Barnett’s account of a lifetime spent with his nose buried in comic books – until eventually he began writing them – as well as pieces from Haji Mohamed Dawjee, Antonia Cundy, Liz Moseley and Nicky Woolf. Order your copy here at a special member price.
We’ll be back from hibernation on Tuesday 3 January. Until then, all of us at Tortoise thank you for the support and interest you have shown for our work this year. We hope you get a good break over the holidays and we wish you a happy and healthy new year.
Allbest.
