A terrified Crewe pensioner escaped their house and called the RSPCA – after a bright orange corn snake found its way in through roof space.

At 5pm on Tuesday (December 6), a Crewe pensioner took refuge in her outhouse after being startled by a snake – that coiled up underneath a filing cabinet in a loft bedroom.

She called the RSPCA and inspector Caren Goodman-James was called out to a home near Crewe.

The corn snake had been missing since Sunday evening (December 4) after escaping from a vivarium (Wikimedia Commons).

It turns out the corn snake was owned by next door neighbour’s teenage son.

The reptile had been missing since Sunday evening (December 4) after escaping from a vivarium.

This non-venomous snake found its way through roof space into the adjacent property.

A thorough search of the loft storage space and furniture failed to uncover the slippery customer, who looks to have vanished into a hole near a skirting board.

The RSPCA inspector spent time calming down the elderly lady – who will be staying with relatives while the snake hunt is resolved.

Inspector Goodman-James said: “Owners do need to take responsibility for their snakes and other reptiles.

“They need to make sure their enclosures are secured and checked on a regular basis – even at this time of the year when they are less active.

“We don’t normally get snakes trapped in wall spaces and the situation will need to be monitored.

“We would advise a specific snake trap is used so when the snake will be hungry enough to come out again to feed and will be safely contained.”

The RSPCA revealed December 6 is its busiest day in winter – a time when there has been a shocking rise in abandonment and neglect incidents.
