A West Yorkshire couple returning home from their African vacation got a surprise when they discovered an infant lizard in their luggage.

The small gecko, about the size of a pound coin, was discovered 4 days after the couple, who had actually been holidaying in Zanzibar, made the 5,000-mile (8,046km) journey home to Wakefield.

The stowaway was found as the case was unpacked, and the RSPCA was called.

The gecko is now being looked after at a professional rescue centre in Ossett.

Animal Rescue Officer David Holgate, who was dispatched to gather the small lizard, said: “It is a huge surprise that the gecko made it through such a long-haul journey in a travel suitcase – then to remain there for another 4 days prior to being found is quite incredible.”

According to the RSPCA, stowaways such as geckos would be extremely not likely to endure UK temperature levels outdoors and need to be rehomed to expert keepers, zoos or wildlife parks with the understanding and centers to care for them.

A representative for Reptilia Exotic Animal Rescue, where the lizard was taken, said: “Accidentally imported geckos are extremely typically seen in the bulk of reptile saves up and down the nation.

“We have a few of them with us at the minute that have actually originated from different continents.

“Once this one has actually settled in it will be prepared to be rehomed when the quarantine duration has actually passed.”

The RSPCA recommended holidaymakers to completely inspect their travel luggage prior to departure “simply in case they too get an unexpected stowaway”.
