Scientists in India have found a brand new historical large snake that lived round 47 million years in the past, reaching lengths of over 15m (50ft), making it one of many largest serpent species ever.

The snake has been named Vasuki Indicus after the legendary snake across the neck of the Hindu deity Shiva.

Fossil stays of the snake had been recovered within the western state of Gujarat from a lignite mine which dates to the Middle Eocene interval about 47 million years in the past.

Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee in Uttarakhand assessed 27 “mostly well-preserved” vertebrae stays of what seemed to be from a fully-grown snake.

The snake’s vertebrae measure between 37.5 and 62.7mm in size, and about 62 and 111mm in width.

Scientists estimate that the snake doubtless reached lengths from 11 to 15m, or in regards to the size of a full-size faculty bus and comparable in dimension to the longest recognized snake to ever stay, the extinct Titanoboa.

These measurements additionally recommend that the snake was broad and cylindrical, doubtless slow-moving, and will have been an ambushing predator much like modern-day anacondas.

But primarily based on fossil options, researchers suspect V. Indicus, not like anacondas, had a non-aquatic life-style.

However, the potential for an aquatic life-style for this large Indian snake “cannot be completely ruled out,” they are saying.

“An arboreal lifestyle is unlikely, judging from the large size of Vasuki and the fact that arboreal snakes tend to have elongated vertebrae,” researchers added.

V. Indicus belongs to the Madtsoiidae household that existed for round 100 million years from the Late Cretaceous to the Late Pleistocene, and lived in a broad geographical vary that features Africa, Europe, and India.

The new species, researchers say, represents a lineage of huge snakes that originated within the Indian subcontinent and unfold through southern Europe to Africa about 56 to 34 million years in the past.

“Biogeographic considerations, seen in conjunction with its inter-relationship with other Indian and North African madtsoiids, suggest that Vasuki represents a relic lineage that originated in India,” scientists wrote within the examine.
