Each week, Mansion Global tackles a subject with an elite group of designers from around the globe who work on luxurious properties. This week, we discover the most important rug traits proper now.

Fall is a season of change. The leaves flip colours, sweater climate is again, and pumpkin spice lattes rule the menus of espresso outlets in every single place. The annual warming development can also be the proper time to contemplate warming up your interiors with a brand new rug.

“A rug can be the fine art in a room, setting the stage for the style,” mentioned Samantha Gallacher, Founder of Art + Loom, a rug firm based mostly in Miami. “While furniture may remain neutral, a rug is an expression of the homeowner’s artistic style. It helps to ground the furniture and set the parameters of the space,” she mentioned.

For some inspiration on turning a brand new leaf underfoot, listed here are the latest rug traits, courtesy of prime designers, that will help you add autumnal feels with out having to overtake your home.

Shape Shifting

“Soft shapes and amorphic silhouettes have become very popular—whether it’s the shape of the overall rug or the design that sits in a rectangular rug. Amorphic shapes allow designers to set up a furniture plan that is unique to the space and create a rug that follows this shape. Odd-shaped rugs also create a unique custom approach to visualizing the entire space.

“We have seen a shift from cool grays and blues to warm taupes, browns and honey colors. In the past, clients have been afraid of bringing in cream, bone or white shades, but these colors are becoming very popular in more natural fibers such as lines, allo and mohair.

“Graphic flat rugs are giving way to more textural patterns—whether in the weaving technique or the pile heights. We are using a lot more fibers including linen, allo, mohair, alpaca and leather. Sustainable materials have also become popular with recycled eco-nylons, which have a soft handful and are also quite durable.”

Bold Animal Motifs

“Scalloping is having a moment, and rugs that incorporate this element could be perfect for less formal spaces or kids’ rooms. We’re also seeing a lot of strong animal motifs in new floor coverings lately. Tibetan tigers and Turkish snakes have been used in rug design for centuries—and will be for centuries more—but they do seem to be having a bold moment. Consider looking for a vintage or antique rug on Chairish, 1stDibs or even Etsy that comes with a patina you simply won’t get with a new rug at retail.

“Sustainable materials like certified organic wool, jute, cotton or bamboo silk are becoming a mainstay. Many natural fibers are inherently sustainable if they are grown without the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers. Hand-knotted wool rugs are a popular, sustainable and renewable resource that naturally resists staining because of the lanolin that coats each fiber.”

Natural Selection

“We try to incorporate many colors throughout our rugs by heathering in several color threads into one ‘color’ to bring depth to the rug.

“For our first rug collection, we looked to nature to inform the color scheme. Colors were inspired by fall foliage beginning to change. The natural colors that came through were saturated burgundies, warm acid greens and deep evergreen tones. These hues were what drove the wool yarn colors we selected. We also looked to the Mediterranean Sea’s complex blue tones. Using nature to inform the color story allows the rugs to work in many different places.

“We think people are moving away from ‘fast’ products such as inexpensive, poorly made homeware products and are now more interested in investing in pieces they will have for a lifetime. Look for materials like hand-knotted 100% Ghazni wool, which we used to create our collection. It’s known for its softness and luster and is made to last. Sumac braided sisal is another durable material that brings in a natural feeling.”

Old Is New Again

“Rugs can tie the whole look of a room together. They can be a subtle complement to all the other colors and patterns in a room and ground the space. On the other hand, they can be a statement in and of themselves and take center stage with bold patterns and colors.

“Vintage rugs continue to be in high demand. Turkish, Persian, Moroccan—there are so many unique options to find a match perfect for your space. The soft texture and endless patterns of a Beni rug are like beautiful art underfoot.

“Colors range from tone-on-tone textured in soft neutrals, which feel soft and inviting in a calm, relaxing space to deep, cozy natural dyed fibers in a vintage rug such as greens, terracotta, browns and indigo, which can finish off a room perfectly, too.

“Natural fibers like wool, jute, sisal, organic cotton and silk continue to remain dominant, however, synthetics have come a long way and are great for families in high-traffic areas.”
