The number of domestic and exotic animals abandoned at an urban park has tripled in recent years according to Parks Canada
The agency says the increase in pets being left in the Rouge National Urban Park between Scarborough and Pickering is part of a growing problem.
Parks Canada warns that an animal accustomed to living in someone’s home is typically unable to fend for itself if left alone in the wild.
It can also carry and pass diseases, parasites and viruses to native species.
Rescue teams that work to find neglected animals before natural elements take over say the remains of a dog were discovered in the park last November, and experts believe it died due to starvation and freezing temperatures.
