Imagine looking attentively into your fish pond just to be met the eyes of a poisonous snake.

A female in Warner Robins, Georgia, found precisely that while checking out her koi pond enclosure on Saturday afternoon. She employed snake catcher James Dowling, of Houston County Georgia Snake Removal & Relocations.

“[It was] not an extremely enjoyable elimination call,” Dowling said in a Facebook post detailing the occurrence. “[The] homeowner sent me a couple of pictures of a snake she identified inside her koi pond enclosure. Details of the image were not excellent, however I sensed it was a cottonmouth.”

Cottonmouths—likewise referred to as water moccasins—are a poisonous snake types discovered throughout the southeastern United States along with north into southern Indiana and Illinois, according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.

“There is a particular level of enjoyment entering into a difficult elimination,” Dowling informed Newsweek. “The pond is confined [and] resembled entering the tropical rain forest with very few clear locations to walk…I understood that if I discovered the snake not in the water, I would need to act quick or the snake would dart into the water since it’s a safety zone.”

After a fast search around the pond, Dowling identified the snake, nestled in between a group of rocks. “Once the snake identified me and recognized it will be challenged it was attempting to get away back into the water for safety and wasn’t too delighted to be being captured and gotten rid of from its tropical-like paradise,” he said.

Cottonmouths, like many snakes, will constantly attempt to leave as a very first port of call when they are approached by a human. If this is not possible, they will vibrate their tails and stretch open their big, white mouths, from which they got their name.

Biting is just utilized as an outright last hope and just normally occurs when the snakes are dealt with or stepped on. It is, for that reason, constantly a good idea to hire a snake catcher if you see one on your property instead of attempting to eliminate it yourself.

At this time of year, however, snakes frequently prevent revealing themselves at heat of the day. “Things tend to slow a bit throughout the most popular parts of the year as the snakes tend to utilize nightfall to come out more for hunting and moving,” Dowling said. “Much like individuals, snakes discover the most popular days to be uneasy and would rather not be out in it if they can help it. That’s not to state we will not see them throughout the heat of the day however it’s simply not as typical.”
