BHOPAL: A police constable in Madhya Pradesh is the toast of animal lovers after giving CPR to a snake that had fallen unconscious after being drenched in pesticide-laced poisonous water to flush it out of a home in Narmadapuram.
A video of constable Atul Sharma blowing air into the snake via mouth-to-mouth resuscitation is being shared extensively on social media. The serpent – a non-poisonous ‘dhaman’ or rat snake – is seen inert at first and it is seen puffing up when Sharma blows air into its windpipe.
It regains consciousness and slithers away after some time. According to Sharma, he was on Dussehra responsibility on Tuesday when he obtained a name from residents of Tawa Colony in Narmadapuram {that a} snake had entered their home.
‘It took practically an hour for the snake to regain consciousness’
Sharma is a self-taught snake rescuer – studying the abilities on Discovery channel.
He went to the home and located that the snake had taken refuge in a pipe and the household had poured buckets of pesticide-laced water into it. “It was already unconscious. We extricated the snake and tried to revive it by rinsing its mouth with water. Then, I administered CPR. It took practically an hour for the snake to regain consciousness and we launched it safely in a forest,” Sharma, who’s posted in Semiharchand police outpost, advised reporters.
However, a vet contended that administering typical CPR to a snake would not actually work and that the snake seemingly revived itself after a short lived bout of unconsciousness.
Sharma did give the snake CPR, although, and is being hailed as a hero. A local of Chhindwara district, he has served at Pachmarhi police station for 5 years, and has been rescuing snakes since he was at school 12.
