Two issues that don’t often go collectively are science fiction and sports activities. There are exceptions, like Rollerball and Real Steel, however for probably the most half, you get sci-fi films otherwise you get sports activities films. Rarely each.

What you do get extra usually than you notice is sports activities in sci-fi. Football in Starship Troopers. Skateboarding in Back to the Future. Scenes right here and there of basketball and martial arts. Those final two are examples artist Cuyler Smith has latched onto for the latest, and perhaps biggest, entries into his Trading Cards sequence, a long-running sequence of playing cards he’s launched by way of Gallery 1988 of characters from sports activities films and TV exhibits.

“I would like the thank Gallery 1988 for their continued support with my trading card series and to all of the fans and collectors that have helped this dream become a reality,” Smith mentioned. “I never imagined that I would create 250 cards and I look forward to continuing to grow and evolve the series in the future.”

Oh, and as a bonus, we’ve gone again by way of the archives to tug a couple of of Smith’s older sci-fi playing cards.

“I had the idea for a Snake Plissken card for a while, but I knew I had to do something new and original with this iconic character,” Smith mentioned. “I wanted it to appear like the card was directly pulled from the film. The design and overall look of the card were inspired by the opening credits and the 3D depth helps to simulate the look of a hologram.”

“I love the character of Ripley and seeing her showcase her basketball skills in Alien Resurrection was something that always stuck with me,” Smith mentioned. “The card needed to have a futuristic look to it in order for it to feel authentic and worthy of the character. I researched the interior layouts from the USM Auriga and incorporated those aspects into the 3D design. After getting her expression and gesture locked in, I then focused on overlap and added additional layers on her to enhance the depth for the card.”
