5 desert tortoises live and well today after Sonoma County firemens saved the reptiles from an electrical fire in Santa Rosa over the weekend.

The Sonoma County Fire District and the Santa Rosa Fire Department reacted around 9:30 a.m. Saturday to a report of an electrical fire inside a horse trailer on a residential or commercial property on Stony Point Roadway.

When firemens got to the website, an organization called Animal Solutions Drug store, they saw light smoke originating from the automobile.

The tortoises had actually been briefly housed inside the trailer, which consisted of considerable heat sources and straw, for shelter throughout the winter, according to Karen Hancock, Sonoma County Fire District’s public details officer.

Firemens believe the heating sources were too near to the straw and triggered the fire, Hancock stated.

When firemens got rid of the tortoises, who remained in good condition, they put them inside an indoor shelter, far from the cold.

The last firemen system left the scene at about 9:55 a.m., Hancock stated.

The Sonoma County Fire District has actually experienced its share of animal saves, consisting of felines stuck in trees or conserving horses from blazes. Still, saving the sluggish, yet constant reptiles was thought about to be an unusual occasion.

” You never ever understand what to anticipate,” Hancock stated. “Every day is various, tortoises are not things we see every day.”

Later on Saturday night, firemens went back to the home to help move the 5 tortoises into another indoor shelter on the home.

The fire department normally sees an uptick in electrical fires throughout the winter season due to vacation decors or heat sources, Hancock stated.

The peak months for electrical fire deaths are now through March, according to the National Fire Defense Association.

” Saving tortoises was certainly a very first for our teams,” Hancock stated. “We’re wanting these tortoises a long, constant life.”
