An 81-year-old widower died on Saturday after he ran again inside his burning Michigan home to attempt to save his beloved rescue canine.


John Balkevitch and his canine Lexi died after the fireplace in Roseville broke out within the morning, based on ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV and The Macomb Daily.


The Roseville Fire Department and the Roseville Police Department didn’t instantly reply to PEOPLE’s requests for remark.


Neighbor Jackie Chaviz instructed The Macomb Daily that there was a big growth that brought about different residents to go away their properties. Within seconds, the home stuffed with smoke earlier than bursting into flames.

A GoFundMe campaign launched to assist with funeral bills shared a Facebook message from John’s different daughter Kimberly.

Kimberly added that she’ll “miss our walks & talks of life. He all the time had my again and I’ll miss that.”
