One vet has gone viral after revealing the five dog breeds he ‘would never own’, including popular Pugs and Dachshunds.

Posting on TikTok, @ben.the.vet listed the conditions and health issues that many of these pups have, saying he would avoid buying a dog that has been over-bred. “I’ve seen quite a few of these already, but I thought I would give my opinion. Please remember that this is my opinion, so you may disagree,” he said at the start of the clip.

Take a look at the breeds below:

Despite being one of the nation’s favourite dog breeds, Ben explained that Dachshunds are prone to various health issues.

“They’re really lovely dogs, some of my favourite patients are sausage dogs, but one in four of them develop back problems in their lifetime,” he said in the video. “That can range from just pain to complete paralysis. This frequently means they have to have spinal surgery, which is obviously a massive undertaking that has a really long recovery period. Too much potential for heartbreak.”

2. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is another dog breed that Ben would avoid owning, adding that they also have too many health problems. These pups are prone to heart disease, ear infections, bone and joint problems, skin issues, neurological problems to name a few, which can cause much heartbreak for owners.

“Pretty much all of them get the same kind of heart disease, called mitral valve disease, which means they mainly spend their final days spluttering and struggling to breathe, and ultimately dying of heart failure,” he said in the video.

“In my opinion, breeding a dog with such a high probability of disease is not fair.”

3. Flat-faced dogs

Flat-faced dog breeds, including Pugs and French Bulldogs, suffer from lifelong health problems.

Ben said: “There are specimens of these dogs that are healthier than others, but they are so prone to so many issues. Spinal issues, skin problems, eye problems. The fact that over half of them have to have a caesarean to give birth is enough of an ethical issue for me to never want to have one. If you’re OK with that, that’s fine but for me personally it’s not very fair.”

4. Shar Pei

Ben went on to say that he wouldn’t own a Chinese Shar Pei because they often try to ‘bite’ staff and also suffer with skin issues. Some of their health issues, caused by over-breeding, include hip and elbow dysplasia, eye problems such as entropion, retinal dysplasia, glaucoma and cataracts, and skin fold infections.

“They’re so wrinkly they have to have their eyelids tacked in place, so the hair on them doesn’t get into their eyes. They’re always getting skin issues and they’ve got tiny, narrow ear canals. At the vets, they’re often trying to bite the faces off all of the staff.”

5. Chow Chow

“I’m sure there are some nice ones but I just find they often don’t have a very nice temperament, they’re really aloof. They’re often very aggressive at the vets, but it’s hard to fit a muzzle on their face.

“They suffer quite commonly with eye problems and their purple tongues are a bit unnerving,” added Ben.
