Dog saves proprietor from reckless driver: TxDOT shares story of Katie Parker and Riley

SAN ANTONIO – TxDOT’s new security marketing campaign “Be Safe. Drive Smart” is working to advertise pedestrian security by highlighting the story of Katie Parker, who was considerably injured by a careless driver in an accident that killed her canine.
In July 2016, Katie Parker and her canine, Riley, had been out on a morning run when a driver didn’t yield to them whereas crossing the road at a crosswalk.
Parker was hit with such pressure that she was thrown almost 60 toes. Riley, sadly, didn’t survive.
“Sadly, my dog, Riley, did lose her life that day and save(d) me. I don’t think I’d be here without her. She (Riley) was on the side where the car hit us. Everyone who was there, at the crash scene, said that Riley jumped and took the impact of the crash instead of me,” mentioned Katie Parker. “I’m lucky to be alive. I’m just one of thousands of pedestrians or bicyclists seriously injured or killed in crashes every year on Texas roads.”
922 folks died in pedestrian accidents all through Texas in 2022, making up one out of each 5 deaths on Texas roads.
TxDOT hopes that “Be Safe. Drive Smart,” which got here to San Antonio late final 12 months, will remind Texas drivers to be careful for pedestrians, and all the time observe site visitors legal guidelines.
