CHICO, Calif. — Chico’s Torres Shelter is dealing with moneying to get a brand-new space for the lots of dogs that the homeless bring with them when they relocate.
Dogs are presently enabled at the Torres Shelter however need to be on-leash at all times.
The brand-new dog park would consist of space to run and play, 8 to 10 kennels, dog fitness instructors, an animal cleaning station and veterinary services for Chico’s furriest good friends.
“It’s really vital to be able to accommodate our pets, here, at the shelter,” said Torres Shelter Associate Director Jacques Lewkowicz. “They are experiencing homelessness just like our guests are and it’s a lot of trauma to have to come into a shelter. Just being able to have a space that is safe and comfortable for them to be in is important.”
Lewkowicz’ own dog, Duke, was rescued from Camp Fire and plays in a little yard near the front of the shelter with another worker’s dog, a German Shepherd.
The overall cost for the park and kennels is $350,000 and the Torres Shelter is presently $5,000 brief and looking for contributions.
Lewkowicz hopes building and construction can begin this summertime.
