ST. GEORGE —This brand-new family pet store is the cat’s meow.
From a complete doggie bakeshop to family pet wash stations and a specialist cat groomer, Whisker & Bone is supplying Southern Utah with something a little various.
“It’s been really wonderful to watch the support people have for me,” Whisker & Bone owner Samm Albright said. “And not just for me, but the idea that I have and the space I’m trying to create. The vibe, the feeling.”
Whisker & Bone uses whatever a cat or dog requirements from infancy all the method through seniorhood. The aisles are filled with materials, tough products, food, treats and toys.
The very first thing you may observe when entering the store isn’t simply the range of items, it’s the odor of something scrumptious. But sorry human beings, these treats aren’t for you.
To the right of the entryway are Doggie Bakes, a complete dog treat bakeshop. Owner Amiyo Gill bakes up fresh treats made from components such as peanut butter and regional raw honey, with garnishes like beetroot and turmeric powder to produce their vibrant look.
Other specialized treats consist of dog churros, which are made from sweet potatoes, apples, flour and eggs and consist of no preservatives, ingredients, or dyes. Doggie Hot pockets are made with chicken and thyme and heated up for 20 seconds prior to being served to a lucky canine.
Need to suds up your puppy? The “Sun Moon” and the “Moon Room” are 2 self-serve dog cleans inside Whisker & Bone that consist of natural hair shampoo and conditioner, towels and a groomer-grade blowdryer that can burn out the undercoat and stop shedding in its tracks.
“As far as I know, they’re the only single-room dog washes with tubs that can fit truly any size dog in Southern Utah that isn’t timed,” Albright said. “It’s the same fee no matter the dog’s weight or coat. Just come in, I have a Bluetooth speaker you can take in with you and enjoy your time.”
Prefer the hands-off approach? Three full-time expert groomers with a cumulative grooming experience of 25 years are all set to prim both cats and dogs. Albright said one groomer focuses on cat grooming and quickly will be the only licensed cat groomer in Southern Utah.
Grooming happens in a gently-paced environment, and just one groomer touches each animal from start to end up. While numerous grooming hair salons have groomers take in approximately 20 animals a day, she said groomers at Whisker & Bone see approximately 6 animals a day, permitting the specific time they require and a happy workplace.
“For having this as a career, it’s important to me that they don’t have that burnout. It can’t just be about my bottom line, because my bottom line is them, and him,” Albright said about her staff members and her 15-month-old child.
The painted walls throughout Whisker & Bone are being finished by artist Emily Staheli. Albright said it seems like Staheli “reached into her brain and ripped out what she wanted, then spattered it on the wall,” and couldn’t be better that whatever is ending up precisely how she envisioned. She asks clients to pardon their dust as they put the ending up discuss the store.
The story behind the store
Albright’s love for family pet nutrition and care began when she raised a blanket from among her 3 toy poodles and found half-eaten antiperspirant sticks, tooth paste and pens. At the time, she discovered it entertaining, however after informing her groomer about it, she recognized it was no laughing matter. When asked what sort of food she was providing her dogs, she wasn’t gotten ready for what she will hear.
“She looked me directly in the eye,” Albright said. “‘I’ll never forget. She’s like, ‘That’s like feeding your toddler McDonald’s every single day. They’re looking for nutrients in other places.”
As she strolled into Lovin’ Arms Pet Center — now called The Modern Pet — looking for correct nutrition, she viewed the owner speak with individuals about their animals’ income in such a way she had actually never ever heard. She right away felt inspired and understood it was precisely what she wished to do as a profession.
After altering pet food for a couple of weeks, her dog wasn’t hoarding or going through the trash any longer. She went back to the store and “talked her way into a job.”
“I just knew I wanted to be there,” she said. “And the first day there I was even more inspired than I ever thought I could be. I just want to help people have their pet as long as possible.”
After 9 years in the family pet nutrition market, she stepped away in November 2022 and started developing Whisker & Bone from the ground up. She signed the lease on the store area in January.
“It’s just he and I,” she said about her child. “We’re here. We’re doing this. I’m doing this for him. I’m doing this for the pets. And I’m also doing this to create jobs for our community. Not just a job, but a career and a life.”
Albright said she makes every effort to see her staff members prosper, with the capability to purchase things like a home and car. Watching them put those dollars back into the neighborhood rather of living income to income is something she will constantly be enthusiastic about.
“It’s been overwhelming, it’s been rewarding, it’s been inspiring,” she said. “It’s been like, right – right where I’m supposed to be. Every step of the way. Watching it all come together makes me tear up.”
