It was a neighbour’s canine that introduced the hare into our lives. We used to take the bouncy labrador for walks round our village in Cambridgeshire. We referred to as her Flossy, after a great-aunt. We fed her on greenery, brushed her fur, held her on our knees and tickled between her ears. She licked our arms. We have been generally known as “the family with the hare”. She was fairly nervous, but when we waved our fingers below her nostril, she would fortunately assault them along with her entrance paws, like a boxer.
