Texas Gov. Greg Abbott vetoed a dangerous dog bill that was presented after the mauling death of an 81-year-old man in San Antonio.

Ramon Najera, 81, and his better half were attacked by three pit bulls in February. Najera passed away from the injuries he sustained in the attack.

Firefighters needed to utilize choice axes to attempt and get the dogs far from the couple.

The guv said Texas’ hazardous dog laws are already strong enough and the justice system need to be permitted to do its job.

In a veto pronouncement, Abbott mentioned that there have actually already been felony arrests made in the San Antonio case. The 2 dog owners are now charged with injury to a senior and a harmful dog attack leading to death.

All the dogs included have actually been euthanized.

“The justice system need to be permitted to work without the over-criminalization discovered in this expense,” the guv said.

The law would have increased charges for owners after a dog attack and enable animal control firms to start examinations into hazardous dogs without a victim affidavit submitted.

Rep. Liz Campos submitted the expense on behalf of a few of her constituents who were assaulted by dogs. She informed KABB in April that IT was among her leading concerns this session.

“We cannot be losing lives due to the fact that of people being trampled by dogs,” she formerly said. “It’s undesirable.”

The Najera family was pulling for the expense. The City of San Antonio’s Animal Care Services (A/C) was likewise in assistance of the expense. A representative said that it would help them hold animal owners liable.

Officials with air conditioner provided the following declaration:

The Governor’s veto of HB4579 is frustrating however homeowners need to be held liable for the threatening and vicious habits of their dogs. Animal Care Services will continue to deal with our leaders, our lawmakers, our courts and our neighborhood to do simply that. We ask that everybody with an animal learn more about the animal laws in your neighborhood. Learn them. Follow them.

Ignorance is no reason for irresponsibility and for too long this willful carelessness has actually reduced the lifestyle and safety in San Antonio communities. As air conditioner gets ready for the upcoming budget plan, the department will ask for assistance for programs and workers that stabilize public safety and positioning.

Abbott ended the pronouncement by stating he wishes to deal with other methods to avoid dog attacks prior to they take place.
