An elderly woman in South Carolina was killed by an alligator Tuesday early morning, cops state.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office said the 69-year-old female was discovered unresponsive near the edge of a lagoon in the Spanish Wells neighborhood of Hilton Head Island at around 9:30 a.m.
“Rescue efforts were made and an alligator appeared and was safeguarding the female, disrupting emergency situation efforts,” the sheriff’s office explained.
“The gator was securely eliminated from the location and the female’s body was recuperated.”
Beaufort County Coroner’s Office is preparing to perform an autopsy on the victim.
Authorities think the female was walking her dog near the lagoon when the attack happened.
Major Angela Viens, a constable’s workplace representative, informed the Associated Press that the victim’s dog was discovered safe.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources reported that the alligator was almost 10 feet long, according to FOX Carolina.
“It is unclear at this moment where she was taken into the water,” the constable’s workplace said.
According to authorities, this is the 2nd regional casualty including alligators over the previous year. An 88-year-old Sun City citizen was killed by one near a lagoon last August.
