Brian Leith, of BDL Canine Services in Scotland, is working with and assessing bug-sniffing dogs.
“It could take someone in pest control 20 minutes to find the bedbugs, if they can find them. To search the whole floor of a hotel is very time-consuming for humans. My boy can sometimes find them in less than ten seconds,” he instructed The Sunday Times.
Dr Chris Papadopoulos, principal lecturer in public well being on the University of Bedfordshire, stated early detection of bedbugs is essential as they will unfold into hard-to-reach corners and lie dormant for months with out meals.
“Unlike mosquitoes, they don’t transmit diseases, but their bites can cause allergic reactions, including welts and itchiness,” he stated.
“If you suspect an infestation, act quickly. DIY methods may not suffice, and professional pest control services are often recommended. It’s essential to seal every gap in your home with caulk.
“Multiple treatments may be required, and the cost can be significant, sometimes even upwards of £25,000, as reported by people who have dealt with infestations.”
