A Pittsburgh-area girl who was defending her canine sustained non-life-threatening accidents when she was attacked Tuesday night by a mother bear defending her cubs.
The incident occurred round 8:30 p.m. in Butler Township, about 35 miles north of Pittsburghwhen Lee Ann Galante went outdoors to verify on her barking canine.
Galante, 55, found her canine in an altercation with a black bear accompanied by three cubs. As she tried to separate her canine, she was bitten on the top. She additionally suffered accidents to her face, neck and each arms.
Galante managed to free herself and received again inside her home with the canine, which was unhurt. She was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for therapy of her accidents and is predicted to go away in good situation.
The mom bear was euthanized on the scene after persevering with to be aggressive, the Pennsylvania Game Commission stated. The cubs have been tranquilized and transported to an undisclosed location. They could also be tagged and launched into an wilderness space, although a spokesperson for the fee advised WTAE that they’re “leaning more towards caution and probably euthanizing these cubs to test them for rabies just in case.”
“This is a first for me and first for the area,” Sgt. Thomas Vensel of the Butler Township Police advised CBS Pittsburgh. “Talked to some people [who said] they’d been seeing [bears] in the area. Obviously, there was a bird feeder up here that was knocked down. We had warm weather lately, so I’m assuming these animals are out and about.”
One neighbor advised TribLive she had seen a bear in the area at least 10 times inside the final month, whereas one other’s doorbell digicam captured 4 bears rummaging by means of trash cans.
Officials suggested owners to convey chook feeders, pets, pet meals and trash indoors at evening since bears are leaving hibernation and in search of meals. People also needs to not get between a mom bear and their cubs.
