A rescue on Wednesday, January 11, however proved the most challenging for the 23-year-old, based at the Seri Balik Pulau station in Penang.
This is because he had to coax a stray dog that somehow got stranded on the ledge of a seven-floor apartment building at Teluk Kumbar.
Speaking to Malay MailLeo said when they arrived at the scene, the dog was lying motionless.
“After securing myself, I moved closer to the dog but it suddenly turned aggressive upon seeing me by showing its teeth and started to growl at me.”
A resident later offered nuggets and water in an attempt to lure the dog to safety but failed.
“After some time of failing to get the dog, we decided to improvise on our rescue mission where one of my colleagues used a gunny sack to block the dog’s view while I used a towel to wrap it and move it to safety.”
Leo said he was not worried about his safety during the entire rescue exercise.
“I was more concerned about the dog if it suddenly decided to jump off the building,” he said, adding that he showered the dog with sweet words during the rescue process but was not entertained by it.
After taking the lift to the ground floor, the dog escaped from Leo’s arms and ran off.
A clip taken by the apartment’s resident Nasrun Naim Tajudin of the rescue mission has since gone viral on social media.
According to Nasrun, residents noticed the dog’s presence on the ledge and contacted the Fire and Rescue Department.
“They reached the scene at 3.15pm and the dog was rescued at 4.30pm,” he said.
Nasrun said the dog is a stray that roams the area.
“We believe the dog came from the hilly areas behind our apartment and it entered via a connecting bridge that links the multi level parking with the residential units.”
The teacher added that this was the first incident a stray had gotten stranded at the ledge and warrants rescue by firemen.
