Nova, the Police Dog

The Eastham Police Dept.’s first group useful resource canine resides as much as her identify — Nova — chosen by her handler, faculty useful resource officer Dan Burnham.

“They love her,” Burnham mentioned of the scholars’ responses to the pup. Sometimes the children see cops and steer clear, “even though I think I’m a nice person,” he mentioned. But now, “the kids are coming up to say hi to Nova and then having a conversation with me about her.”

The thought of including a group useful resource canine to Eastham’s roster got here to Burnham throughout coaching on the National Association of School Resource Officers. “I’d see more and more comfort therapy dogs,” he mentioned.

Nova will bear coaching early subsequent 12 months to earn her AKC Canine Good Citizen certification with plans to coach her in “friendly find” capabilities to help in searches for lacking individuals.
