I instructed myself it was doable the intentions of the universe have been being channeled by our next-door neighbor Kelly.

She is how we discovered of a pair who wished to “re-house” their canine. They knew Kelly as an excellent soul who was additionally a canine person and thought she might need some recommendations.

That’s when she contacted us. Becky and I talked to the couple after which with one another and, after a fairly quick deliberation, determined: “Yes, we should take this dog.” And so, final Sunday was D-Day — Dog-Day — right here at our home. That is the day Luna joined our pack.

For almost 4 years we’ve kicked across the notion of taking up one other animal. We knew we couldn’t exchange Sydney, our loyal companion for 15 years. “Replace” is the incorrect phrase. When a companion animal dies, it takes time to simply accept that one other creature may match into your life. At least, it took me some time.

I saved overthinking the entire concept, considering I may by some means work out the most effective time, considering I may organize my world alone phrases. “Is it better to get a new dog in the summer? Maybe winter would be easier. And what about that long trip we have planned? How can we board an animal who would just be getting to know us?” It appears there isn’t any finish to the reasons for not taking the massive step into the unknown. Still, including a companion animal to the family was at all times in our plans.

(I think in some circles, utilizing a time period like “companion animal” is likely to be regarded as being overly treasured or being in lockstep, fashionable PC mode. But I agree with the ASPCA which defines a companion animal as “domesticated or domestic-bred animals whose physical, emotional, behavioral and social needs can be readily met as companions in the home or in close daily relationship with humans.” This time period precisely describes the connection Becky and I are likely to develop with animals.)

On the cellphone Luna’s companion people instructed us she is 4 years old; About 60 kilos; Good round kids; Likes to go for walks and automotive rides; and is a bit timid. Oh, she additionally likes to chase squirrels. They provided to drive her to our home for a meet and greet. We appreciated that and thought they may wish to see the place she could be residing. I wish to suppose that if I have been a canine, this property full of timber, large meadows, creeks and a wide range of critters and their accompanying smells could be Dog Heaven. As far as squirrels are involved, we actually have lots round right here to maintain her on excessive alert.

Eventually, they stated their bittersweet goodbyes, gave Luna one final scratch after which drove away. Becky and I leashed our new pal and all of us went for a walk. Kelly’s 5 dogs subsequent door have been fairly vocal after they realized a newcomer was walking on their street. Luna was hesitant about getting too near the canine pen and I didn’t blame her. This day was full of recent, unknown experiences, so we turned again slowly, Luna curiously sniffing on the best way towards her new home.

This morning I awoke early and made able to go for a morning walk. It was chilly and darkish exterior. The clouds hid any moon that may have been. I may see a slight rain within the beam of the sunshine I used to be holding. I may see Luna by flashlight. She was the one moon seen as we walked down the driveway.
