Gina Mattioli, protecting, said: “This is not a case where the defendant performed the surgery himself or that he was present when it was done. But he accepts his involvement in that he was aware that it was being carried out.” 

Magistrates sentenced him to an overall of 20 weeks in jail suspended for 12 months and prohibited him from owning or caring for animals for twenty years. 

“You must have had some knowledge that, at best, this was dubious practice and at worst that it was illegal,” they said.

Caston, of Barley Close, Harleston, who confessed triggering unneeded suffering, was handed a 8 week prison sentence suspended for a year and was prohibited from participation with animals for ten years.

Speaking after the case RSPCA Inspector Dean Astillberry said: “Ear cropping is a dreadful unethical, unneeded and repulsive practice which has definitely no advantages for the dogs and can trigger them long-lasting health, behavioural and social issues.

“This is done simply for cosmetic functions. We would advise the general public and anybody seeking to purchase a puppy to keep in mind this is an unlawful treatment, which has an extremely negative effects for the dogs themselves.

“I am pleased to say Ocean is doing very well and is thriving in her foster home and we would like to thank the Norfolk police officers for all their help and support with this case.”

A representative for Norfolk authorities said officers had actually performed a warrant under the Animal Welfare Act with the RSPCA when Ocean was taken and taken into care. 

“Ocean was not microchipped, was unregistered, and had had her ears recently cut off to the base,” they included.

“Her injuries were contaminated and had inadequate stitching, revealing the unlawful practice to have actually been carried out with no proper ability or aftercare.
