If you’ve just watched the season premiere of HBO’s The Last of Us series, chances are you’re now itching to dive back into Naughty Dog’s games. I know for myself it’s only a matter of time. I played through both Part I and Part II a few months ago but I’ve essentially spent the last three days searching for ways to consume my being with The Last of Us related content.
It’s the reason why Naughty Dog released The Last of Us Part I – last year’s new-gen remake. They knew this appetite was coming. As much as I’m looking forward to yet another playthrough, 2023 is also set to be a year of announcements as the franchise celebrates its 10th anniversary. Naughty Dog have promised several surprises but one thing that’s definitely on the way is the upcoming The Last of Us multiplayer project which has now been teased as the studio’s most “ambitious” project ever.

The multiplayer project was first revealed at last year’s Summer Game Fest. We know very little about the game except that in the Naughty Dog tradition, it’ll still tell a sweeping narrative. Concept art appears to show a struggle between warring factions in the city of San Francisco. Now, Naughty Dog’s co-president Neil Druckmann is opening up a little more about what we can expect from the game.
Speaking to ComicBook (Via Twitter’s NaughtyNDC), Neil said, “There’s a The Last of Us multiplayer project that we’ve been working on for a long time, since even before The Last of Us Part II shipped. That’s the most ambitious project we’ve ever done, expanding the world further, [while] continuing to tell a story but in a multiplayer space … I won’t say too much about that.”
Naughty Dog will no longer reveal games years in advance as they did with The Last of Us Part II. If you recall, last year’s remake was released just three months after it was announced which explains the secrecy surrounding the multiplayer project. Excitingly, Druckmann added, “There’s another project that I will not say anything about that’s beyond that that we’re very much excited about.” Part III? You tease.
