New Haven swears in first-ever authorities treatment dog, Finn

BRAND-NEW SANCTUARY — Police are including their first-ever treatment dog to the ranks as they want to much better serve populations impacted by injury.

Finn, an extremely trained, 3-year-old yellow Labrador retriever, was formally sworn in by New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker as the city’s latest member of police throughout a press conference at authorities head office Tuesday afternoon.

Officials said Finn will be utilized to help neighborhood members who experience trauma, stress and anxiety and other trauma-related conditions. He will likewise be a resource for the authorities department, enhancing officer spirits and supporting those who operate in a high-stress environment.

“I wasn’t a huge fan initially,” New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson said of the concept of including a service dog. “But I enjoy the dog now and I believe it is very important that we do anything possible for the health and wellness of our officers and our neighborhood.”

Officer Finn, who is acknowledged by the Americans with Disabilities Act, was contributed to the department by For Cameron, a regional not-for-profit that works to fight the preconception of drug overdose and dependency. The dog was rescued and trained by the Forever in Our Hearts Foundation, another Connecticut-based not-for-profit.
