Memorial Set for 4-Year-Old Police Dog ‘Sir’ Shot by Suspect in Clairemont Mesa

The San Diego Police Department will maintain a personal memorial service this week for a service canine who was gunned down final month by a firearm-assault suspect whereas making an attempt to take down the wished man on the outskirts of Mesa College.

Mayor Todd Gloria will be a part of SDPD Chief David Nisleit at Thursday morning’s ceremony in honor of police canine Sir, a 4-year-old Belgian Malinois who was killed on Aug. 2.

At about 2:30 that morning, SDPD personnel investigating an obvious road-rage capturing simply east of the junction of Interstate 805 and state Route 163 got here throughout the suspected gunman, later recognized as 33-year-old Benjamin Pickens, within the 7200 block of Mesa College Circle.

Pickens, who had a pistol tucked in his left armpit, ignored officers’ repeated orders to disarm himself, police stated. Following a quick standoff, he walked off, heading towards a close-by empty lot, police stated.

At that time, a canine-handler officer launched Sir, who ran towards the suspect.

Pickens allegedly responded by turning, drawing his gun and pointing it within the path of police, prompting SDPD Officer Addam Ansari to shoot him within the chest with a rifle.

The mortally wounded suspect then shot Sir, who had served the division for 17 months.
