ALEXANDRIA VA – Just a number of days in need of Christmas, on 22nd December 2023, the Del Ray Hardware Store2003B Mount Vernon Avenue, welcomed its new homeowners, Jay and Edea Portlance.

The retailer’s earlier proprietor, Chris Harvey, started the method of retiring again in October and there have been a number of choices for the ironmongery shop. It was both passing the baton or promoting the placement which could get changed into one other business.

When actual property dealer Jay Portlance heard about this, he instantly knew what he needed to do.

“It’s such prime real estate for a restaurant or some other type of establishment,” he instructed Zebra Press referring to the shop location, “I was adamant that we needed a hardware store in Del Ray and so my wife suggested we buy it. From there it all happened very quickly. I started talking to the owner and I think the whole process was five weeks.”

Portlance who renovates properties as a part of his actual property ventures, was already an everyday buyer on the store, and he had an emotional connection to it. The considered dropping this place didn’t sit comfortably with him.

“If I don’t grab this somebody else someone is going to, I thought.”

When requested if he knew a lot about working a ironmongery shop, he stated, “I remodel my own houses, so it’s just stuff I’ve learned over time but I’m a real estate broker. I’m just now starting to get used to finding my way around the store. I’ve also had great staff helping me in the last few weeks.”

The transition, says Portlance, was seamless. Lawyers took care of the paperwork ensuring the whole lot was dotted and signed, and he labored intently with Chris Harvey to study what he may in regards to the business itself.

“I tried to make this transition as stress-free and as profitable for him, and he was trying to make it as smooth as possible for me also. It was a very easy process especially since at the heart of this is the intention to continue the legacy of the store.”

Though Portlance has begun this new enterprise to protect the custom and legacy of the ironmongery shop, he does come aboard with a brand new imaginative and prescient. He and his spouse Edea. who will likely be engaged on the social media piece of the business, are canine and cat rescuers so it will be significant for them to merge their love of animals with the shop. Because of this, dogs will likely be welcome for patrons who want to convey their furry buddies alongside.

“We can’t stop rescuing dogs and cats,” stated the brand new proprietor,“ and I know Del Ray is very dog-centric, so it only makes sense.”

The inside of the institution goes by some adjustments additionally. “We added almost 450 square feet by knocking down a couple of walls that were unnecessary. An office that was taking up space has been taken down, we’ve opened it all up. We also added more fixtures and displays, there’s a lot more space here now.”

But the adjustments to the shop don’t finish there. In the approaching months as Jay settles in, he plans to create a backyard middle behind the shop the place he can promote a wide range of vegetation together with edible vegetation and herbs which he and his spouse usually buy from the Del Ray Farmers Market.

“They always sell so fast at the market,” he stated, “there is a need for it in the community, and having the garden will create a more welcoming environment. Plants are also a huge part of renovating a living space, so I do want to implement that in the coming months.” His spouse Edea, nevertheless, thinks maybe this is likely to be a ruse for Jay to get his palms on extra vegetation.

“I usually grow my own plants at home, he said, “rosemary, basil, things like that, and my wife thinks this is just an excuse to get ahold of more plants”

Ruse or not, it’s clear to see that the Del Ray Hardware retailer couldn’t be in safer palms, and can proceed to flourish and serve the group for a lot of extra years to return because of the Portlances who’re decided to protect its legacy. An endearing story of continuity and one more instance of the connectivity and spirit of Del Ray.
