As Kernow continues to progress through the puppy raising stage, we’ve been in touch with his puppy raiser one last time to find out how they’ve been getting on and what they’re doing to help him prepare for the next stage.
Kernow was bought with money raised by the Martin Jennings Memorial Run that took place in Cornwall last year.
Thousands of bikers take to the roads around Cornwall to raise money for charity in memory of Martin Jennings who lost his life competing in the 1987 Isle of Man Manx GP, and all other bikers who have lost their lives on the Cornish roads.
“Kernow has been making lovely progress with his training and that he’s mostly doing all that’s expected of a pup of his age.
Kernow’s lead work has come on well lately – he’s a very friendly boy and would like to greet everyone and their dog, but he can be distracted away from them with pieces of Kibble, which helps keep his focus on the task at hand.
Towns and other busy situations never faze Kernow, and he’s happy to go wherever his puppy raiser takes him.
When visiting cafes, Kernow is happy to settle out of the way of the other customers, but he does like to say “hello” to them all first.
Kernow has been busy practicing his how to safely go up and down the stairs and the correct etiquette in lifts, and he does really well with these.
Kernow’s favourite place to visit is the beach. He was a little unsure about the water at first, but he now loves to go for a paddle. Kernow enjoys running around on the sand especially if he’s found another dog to play with.
At first, Kernow was quite enthusiastic around other dogs and wasn’t great at reading their body language – he would try to engage in play, even if they didn’t want to. He’s getting much better at figuring out which dogs want to play, and which ones don’t.
Kernow’s favourite games are tug of war and fetch. He is also enjoys nothing more than a fuss from his puppy raiser. Kernow is a really playful pup and is a big chewer, so his puppy raiser ensures he always has a toy or bone to chew on.
We hope you have enjoyed following Kernow through the puppy raising stage of his training. As well as the possibility of moving onto ‘big school’ to begin formal training, Kernow is currently considered for the prestigious role of guide dog dad. Once a decision has been made we will let you know the good news.”
