A person has been jailed for locking his canine inside a crate with “food out of reach and no water” for a number of days.
Daryl Torrance, 34, of Mauchline, East Ayrshire, was sentenced to 6 months in jail and banned from proudly owning animals for ten years at Ayr Sheriff Court after admitting a cost of animal neglect in October 2022.
After receiving an nameless criticism, Scottish SPCA officers who broke into the property had been met with a “with an overpowering stench of ammonia in the stairwell”.
The court docket heard that the officers found Torrance’s canine “in an emaciated and collapsed state”.
The pet, a male brindle and white crossbreed, was locked in a crate mendacity on a blanket soaked in urine and coated in faeces.
In the other nook of the crate was a bowl of untouched pet food that he would have been “unable to reach” and no water.
The court docket heard that the canine was so weak he couldn’t carry his head and needed to be euthanised resulting from excessive struggling.
A microchip revealed that Torrance was the registered proprietor of the pet.
Alistair Duncan, assistant procurator fiscal for North Strathclyde, stated: “This was an appalling example of animal cruelty. This poor dog was left abandoned for a significant period and suffered the terrible consequences of Daryl Torrance’s shocking neglect.
“The law protects animals from harm and COPFS will continue to work robustly to ensure anyone who breaks the law faces prosecutorial action.”
